Fundraising in Your Local Branch
|
New South Wales Fundraiser
Since February 2010, Nancy Watson (NSW Branch Manager) has been fundraising for Grant Williams and his family in an endeavour to purchase to Wheelchair Accessible vehicle.
In September 2003 Grant was diagnosed with a chordoma brain tumour which was surgically removed. The tumour reappeared in 2005 and whilst still working he went through 2 months of intense radio therapy in an aim to get fit. In 2008 he was in training for the Gold Coast 42km Marathon when a routine MRI scan showed the tumour has reoccurred.
After numerous experimental surgeries it was declared that excision of the tumour, which was wrapped around some of the major arteries in the brain, was possible.
July 29th 2008 was the start of a total of 20 operations due to infections, Meningitis and lung collapse. He lost hearing in one ear, was unable to swallow and all of his facial muscles were affected to the extent that he was unable to talk or open his eyes.
Grant became confined to a wheelchair and is now partially paralysed on his left side which limits his ability to maneuver the wheelchair. The family purchased a motorised scooter, which has given Grant so much freedom and the ability to go to the local shops, pick up the kids from school and go on bike rides with the family.
Nancy Watson is fundraising for a specialised vehicle to accommodate Grant’s scooter so the entire family are able to go on outings and family holidays together, and enjoy a lot more quality time together.
On a bus run held just before The Investors Club Annual Conference in February, $81 was raised which kicked off the “Appeal for Grant”.
More recently on Saturday 29th May at an Advanced Workshop, a raffle raised $610 and $438.30 was also raised at a Walk-a-thon held on Sunday 30th May at Terrigal, where Founder Kevin Young joined the participants for breakfast.
